Bird abundance-mist nets in the Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot and Nora Devoe Cut Plots in the Luquillos Experimental Forest

This project seeks to measure long-term trends and variability in bird populations in tabonuco forest at El Verde. Repeated measures of bird populations using mist nets are conducted annually in the Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot. For each bird caught, I obtain physical measurements (weight, length of wing, length of tail), and estimates of fat, age, and breeding condition. Captured birds are marked to estimate mortality and longevity. Data on canopy openness are also collected annually at each mist net as part of this project.

Twenty mist nests are placed in a continuous line along the north-south trail running through the LFDP. The net line begins about 30 m north of the Quebrada Toronja and follows the trail until it runs out of the LFDP. Nets are placed continuously (sharing net poles) except where fallen trees interrupt the line. At these points, the line is broken and continued as soon as practical after the fallen tree. Twelve-meter Japanese mist nets are used, alternating 36 and 30 mm mesh nets (10 each). The southernmost net is a 36 mm mesh net, and is labeled Net 1. Nets are run for four consecutive days each year unless rains require a break in the sampling period. Nets are normally left open during short periods of rain, but long, intense rainstorms require nets to be closed. Netting is done in late May or early June each year. Nets are open at dawn and closed at dusk. Nets are checked frequently, and birds are removed to a banding station nearby. Measurements are taken at the station, and the birds are marked using leg bands or tail clipping. Birds are released directly from the banding station. Additional data from two plots studied by Nora Devoe are also included in this data set.
