General Description of Area

El Verde Research Area of the Luquillo Experimental Forest where this study was conducted is on the western side of the Luquillo Mountains (18°18′ N; 65°49′ W). The sites ranged from 350-400 m asl. Mean annual rainfall is 350 mm with a weakly seasonal regime, and mean temperatures are 22-25 °C [18]. The area is classified as subtropical wet forest based on latitude, potential evapotranspiration and low seasonality according to the Holdridge Life Zone system [18], though the moderating effect of the surrounding ocean on temperatures make this comparable to a tropical wet climate despite the higher latitude.
